Over the years as a professional photographer one question I get asked all the time from the couples I have worked with is how I pose, direct or work with nervous Brides, Grooms and guests. I have developed a style over the years that compliments a wedding unobtrusively. Below are 5 tips to look and feel amazing at your wedding when the camera is focused purely on you! Overcome those fears and look great, read on…
1. Pre-wedding photoshoots
The single most beneficial piece of advice I can suggest for nervous couples is to have a pre wedding photoshoot! There is no better way to feel more relaxed on your wedding day than to have had some photographs taken by your photographer prior to your big day. Pre-wedding shoots allow everyone to build trust and discuss ideas whilst having fun and figuring out the best angles that make you look amazing. A pre-wedding shoot has so many benefits, you’ll have a better idea of how good you will look. You’ll create some stunning images that could be used on your wedding day as a framed print that your guests can sign and you’ll create more excitement leading up to your wedding. I suggest a pre-wedding shoot 4-6 weeks prior to you the wedding to really get the momentum flowing.
2. Choose a photographer whose style matches your personality
Planning a wedding can be hard and finding the right suppliers and photographer will require some effort. It is so important when you meet with photographers to talk about their approach and how they will compliment your wedding day. All photographer’s will have different styles, find a photographer who you feel confident will deliver the images you want and will work with you in a way that makes you feel most comfortable.
3. Consider hiring a photographer for the entire day
Documentary style photography has become increasingly popular over recent years, many couples ask that a photographer now attends for the whole day. This helps document your wedding more authentically and is especially true when it comes to bridal preparations. The time in the morning before your wedding ceremony is so important. Special moments happen during this time that will create some beautiful memories, seeing the father of the bride meet his daughter in her wedding dress is a moment to be treasured forever. If your photographer is present during bridal preparations you and those with you will already begin to feel more comfortable around them, this will lead to more confident posing and photos later in the day.
4. Focus on each other
It’s your wedding so the attention is going to be on you, ALL DAY! That can be overwhelming but remember why you are here, you are marrying your forever person and if you sink into that bubble of comfort everything gets easier, including photography. Look into each others eyes, smile at each other, make each other laugh, this will create authentic images that will make you look fantastic. Trust that your photographer will capture these moments as they happen and you wont need to be posed or directed which can create awkward photographs. As your confidence increases feel free to offer suggestions to your photographer later in the day, they will thank you for it, you’ll feel more involved in the process and the end result? More fun and better photo’s! WINNER.
5. Have a plan but don’t necessarily stick to it
Sometimes the magic when happens when we least expect it. One minute you’ll be enjoying a glass of celebratory champagne, its been raining all day long and you were hoping for that perfect sunset but suddenly the weather breaks and you have glorious sun. Take advantage of moments like this and you’ll never regret it. It’s OK to have a plan but if you try to stick too much to it you could end up feeling stressed, especially if things don’t work out. Settle into the natural flow of the day, trust the professionals around you and relax. This is your wedding, you’ve spent months planning it and likely a large budget paying for it, sometimes great things happen when things don’t go to plan.
